Obsidian & Calcite Inlaid Flower Bowl #301

Obsidian & Calcite Inlaid Flower Bowl #301

Piece #301 – Spalted Sycamore / Green Calcite / Obsidian – 14″ x 3″ – SOLD

This piece is beautifully spalted Sycamore, which blew down near the Tennessee River last Summer. I used Obsidian to make a raised beaded rim near the center. Opaque Calcite dyed green was used to make the gecko inlay. The Japanese flower frog in the middle allows the bowl to display fresh cut flowers.

Vase with Obsidian Outlay #272

Vase with Obsidian Outlay #272

Piece #272 – Chinese Elm / Obsidian Outlay – 3.5″ x 8.5″ – SOLD

This is my first attempt at building an outlay using minerals. Obsidian is a very hard mineral born of silica and lava. It is black. On this piece I mixed in a tiny amount of transparent calcite to give it contrast. I am very pleased with how this piece turned out.

Large Oak Pot #182

Piece #182 – OAK – 8″ dia by 8.5″ tall – Sold

This is a beautiful oak piece. It is large and heavy. The walls are about 3/8″ thick and the bottom is about 3/4″ thick. It has a lustrous varnish finish. I had florist foam in the bottom with artificial ferns and it was gorgeous. However, it is beautiful enough to stand alone.
This piece was sold at the Lenoir City Arts and Crafts Festival on June 4th.

Maple Urn #176

Piece # 176 – Spalted Maple – 7″ dia. by 11″ tall – Sold

The maple for this piece came from my friend Kevin’s back yard. It spalted naturally. I cut it from the crotch in the base of the tree. The striking dark line is the outside edge where the two limbs grew together.

The fungus lines in this piece of spalted maple are quite striking. I have several pieces made from this log. (#179, #185, #188) E mail me if you want them all and I will give you a 20% discount.

Camphor Vase

SOLD

This Camphor vase came from a huge tree that was in Sheri and Doug’s front yard. They cut it down this fall and I got my pick of the wood. Wow! You should see what I have on my curing shelves. There will be a lot of pieces coming from this grand old camphor tree. Already this vase and the prayer box have been turned. My son Mitch has also turned a Chinese vase from this lot of camphor.

Anyone want to do some wood trading?
