Guanacoste Big Bowl #637
Piece #637 – Guanacaste and Calcite Inlay
– 21″ x 3″
An elegant piece that is a platter or a bowl. Multi color calcite frames this piece beautifully.
This striking platter features a multi-color art deco butterfly made of dyed clear calcite crystals. The butterfly is surrounded by small dragonflies which have transparent green wings made of resin. It has it’s own display stand.
This platter was made at a class I took from Andy Gunning at John C. Campbell Folk Art School in September 2016. It was made possible by my dear friends Barbara and Luther Fowler. Thanks.
An assortment of Domestic and Exotic Woods – 8″ by 8″ – $40 each
This free standing medallion is turned from Hard Maple. The outside motif is made up of pierced paisley holes. Just inside the motif is a Calcite inlaid circle. The butterfly is inlaid Calcite crystals. It is finished with several coats of satin lacquer.
This piece developed wings over time. No pun intended. I sliced a Bradford tree limb into about four flat pieces. The idea was to make small hor d’oeuvres trays. That never panned out. I put this piece on the lathe and gave it a slight concave shape. Then I cut the circle groove for mineral inlay. I lost interest and set it aside. It was a dust collector for about two years. When I got the idea for “Rose Among Thorns” Piece #427, I needed to try out the 3D carving effect. I saw the Bradford Pear on the shelf, grabbed a pencil and sketched the tree sprigs around the circle I had made. An idea was born. One thing led to another. The Damsel Fly is a species of dragon fly. Did you catch the play on words? (Damsel in Distress)
This free standing medallion is turned from Hard Maple. The outside motif is made up of carved and pierced rose thorns and rose buds. The thorns, leaves and buds are highlighted with pyrography. The buds and leaves are painted with an air brush. Just inside the motif is a Calcite inlaid circle separating the thorns from the rose. The rose is inlaid Calcite crystals with a smidgen of red glass. It is finished with several coats of satin lacquer. As of this date, 3/6/2014 it is my favorite piece.
This standing medallion is made from Hard Maple. The Dragon Fly and rim design are inlaid Calcite crystals. The bamboo sprig is wood burned with air brushed green leaves. When doing this piece I kept thinking “Less is More”.
This steamed beech platter features a hummingbird drinking from a Hibiscus flower. The bird and flower inlay are about 1/4 inch deep. Minerals used were calcite, fushite, howlite and obsidian. The outside border is optical calcite with the inlay cut all the way through the wood so that light passes through the optical calcite. I have invested about 100 hours of my time in the piece. It has it’s own display stand.
This Calcite humming bird on holly is quite stunning. The humming bird was cut into the holly 1/4 inch deep with a high speed dental drill, using a very small carbide cutting bit. The calcite mineral colors were very carefully selected to match nature’s true colors. The completed piece was polished using Tripoli and white diamond paste on a high speed polishing buffer. It was then sealed with lacquer and polished again.
